Robert Cochran Jr. formerly of Lake City, Pa., passed away Monday, September 16, 2013 at Manchester Presbyterian Lodge. He was born on July 25, 1919, in North East, Pa., son of the late Robert Cochran, Sr. and Genevieve Propeck Cochran. He was raised and educated in Fairview, Pa. after moving there as a young boy.
Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army
and served in France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany. He earned several awards including the American Theater Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with one bronze star
. Following WWII, he served in the Panama crisis and the Korean Conflict
, where he received the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars and the Merit Unit Commendation.
During his service years, he married the love of his life, Luella Arlene Lewis, during a blizzard on December 26, 1944, while on a short leave from his European military duty.
Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to Millcreek, and worked at Erie Technological Products in the maintenance department. He moved his family to Lake City in 1952, where he lived a full life until health issues moved him and his spouse, to the Manchester Presbyterian Home. He retired from Erie Technological Products in 1981.
He was a member of the Lake City Methodist Church, Girard American Legion Post #494, and the Honor Guard. He enjoyed growing vegetables and maintained a fruit orchard, both of which he tended with great pride, sharing his bounty with others. He also enjoyed bowling, writing poetry, and playing cards.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Luella Lewis Cochran, who passed away on December 5, 2012; five sisters, Julia Cochran, Lorene Platz, Leora Frey, Marcia Pieper, and Freda Walker; five brothers, Joseph Cochran, Stuart (Buster) Cochran, Delbert Cochran, James Cochran, and Charles Cochran; and his beloved grandson, Robert Fuller, in 2001.
He is survived by his four daughters, Robin Bessire and her husband Bill of Fremont, Ohio; Patricia Cochran of Erie; Jeanne Pacansky and her husband Mike of Girard; and Margaret Hayes and her husband Roger of Cypress, Texas. Also surviving are his greatly loved grandchildren Amy Lybrook, Kimberly Fleischer, Tina Gorski, Amanda Dennis, Melissa Garthwaite Burkhart, Sarah Hayes, and Roger Hayes IV and 16 great-grandchildren. A sister, Mary Allen, of Napoleon, Ohio also survives, along with many nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives will be received at Edder Funeral Home, Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard, Pa. on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. The funeral service will be at the funeral home, on Thursday at 10 a.m.
Military Honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
