HANOVER Christopher F. Henninger, 43, entered into God's eternal care Monday, September 2, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Chris's brave determination was admirable as he fought a long and hard journey with brain cancer. Christopher was optimistic and never gave up despite the countless treatments and appointments for radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, MRIs, and hospitalizations. He was a hero to us all and was an example of how we should live life to its fullest - one day at a time. Born November 10, 1969, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of Michael F. Henninger of Roanoke, Va., and Patricia (Cassada) Kelley of Aldie, Va. He was the loving husband and best friend of Alina K. (Bridenbaugh) Henninger with whom he shared 17 years of marriage. He was also a sacrificial and adoring father to their 12-year old son, Justin T. Henninger. Christopher was a 1988 graduate of Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, Va. He was a graduate of Trinity College with a degree in counseling and was also a graduate of Penn State University w,here he earned a certificate in the Mid Atlantic Ecological Landscape Series and achieved Master Gardner status. He earned multiple certifications for counseling and gardening but was most proud of the certifications that his backyard gardens earned including; Certified Pennsylvania Pollinator Friendly Garden, Certified Wildlife Habitat and Audobon Bird Habitat. Chris was always compassionate and interested in serving others. Since his illness kept him from doing the jobs that he loved, Christopher served others with Penn State University Cooperative Extension in the Master Gardener program by volunteering his services at the probation and Penn State trial gardens at John Rudy Park in York and other programs in York County. Prior to the above mentioned accomplishments, Christopher served others through his employment at the Molinari Juvenile Shelter in Manassas, Va., where he worked as a counselor for incarcerated youth and also at S.E.R.V.E. as a shelter director working directly with and assisting the homeless in that community. He touched many people's lives and helped pave the way for a better future for countless residents of Prince William County, Va. In addition to his wife and parents, Christopher is survived by his son, Justin T. Henninger of Hanover; his two brothers, Justin P. Dyer of Dale City, Va., and B. Todd Dyer of Farmville, Va.; and his sister, Wendy N. Henninger of Knoxville, Tenn. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Hanover Church of the Brethren, 601 Wilson Ave., Hanover, with Pr. Geraldine Godfrey officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be a gathering immediately following the memorial service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. At this time, friends and extended family are encouraged to visit with Christopher's family and celebrate his life. Contributions may be made in memory of Christopher to Race For Hope-DC, P.O. Box 95066, Newton, MA 02495-0066- (With a note that states the donation is in honor of Christopher Henninger on Team Hopkins); or to Penn State Extension, York County Master Gardeners, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, York, PA 17402, Attn: Chris Henninger Memorial with checks payable to PSCE Program Fund.
