Melvin W. Bartels Obituary
NEW OXFORD Melvin W. Bartels, 92, formerly of Dover Twp., passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012. He was the husband of Dorothy E. (Hummel) Bartels, who died on July 28, 1999. Mr. Bartels was born in Johnson County, Nebraska on March 6, 1920, son of the late H. William and Loiusa S. (Buethe) Bartels. He was employed by the former Goodling Electric as a service technician for air conditioning and refrigeration, retiring in 1982 after 27 years of service. Melvin served his country honorably as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force, serving in the 6th Troop Carrier Squadron. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dover. Memberships include Weigelstown Lions Club since 1973; where he served as Lion Tammer for 15 years, he received Lion of the Year 1984 to 1985 and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Additional memberships, Shiloh American Legion Post 791, V.F.W. Post 556, and the R.S.E.S. Pennsylvania Chapter. He was past Vice President of the Dover Food Bank, the Family Cloth Tree, Dover and the Aid Assoc. for the Lutheran Branch 5511. He was also a past Board of Director of New Hope Ministries, Dover office. Melvin is survived by a daughter, Ann L. Ferguson of Dover. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Marie Bartels. There is a funeral service scheduled for Friday at 11 A.M. at the LeRoy R. Leber Funeral Home, Inc., 2290 School St., York (Shiloh). Officiating will be his pastor, the Rev. John M. Woods of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dover. Final resting place will be beside his wife in Shiloh Cemetery with the Folding of the Flag and Taps Ceremony presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
