HANOVER Thomas "Big Tom" Cerifko, 72, passed peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Hanover Hospital. He was the loving husband for 30 years to Beverley P. (Smith) Cerifko. Born April 20, 1941, in Hawk Run, he was a son of the late Michael and Sophie A. (Polacek) Cerifko. Tom was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Hanover. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and guarded the Alaskan territory, standing down the Russians during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Tom was a member of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post #14, Hanover, and the Hanover Republican Club. Mr. Cerifko was employed with Sears Roebuck in Hanover for 45 years. The last 25 years he served as receiving supervisor and retired in October of 2013. Tom was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and enjoyed playing bingo. He also really enjoyed attending all his grandchildren's sporting events. Additional survivors include six children, Terri Morin and her husband Denny, Spring Grove, Thomas M. Cerifko and his wife Deb, Hanover, Julie Pressel and her spouse Kathy, Abbottstown, Susan Lang and her husband John, New Oxford, Jennie Wolf and her husband Duane, York Springs and Sharon Gibbons and her husband Joe, West Decatur; four siblings, Shirley Kellerman, Phillipsburg, Michael Cerifko, Shippensburg, Steve Cerifko, Niagara Falls, N.Y. and Larry Cerifko, Phillipsburg; also 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra (Gearhart) Cerifko. A service to celebrate the life of Tom Cerifko will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Church of Christ, 100 Fourth St., Hanover, PA with the Rev. Dr. Bruce P. Bouchard officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA, and again on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Family and friends are encouraged to wear "Steelers" clothing to the service. Burial will be in St. Paul's Dubs Cemetery, Hanover where full military honors will be provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Duane Wolf, Matthew Wolf, Justin Moul, Robert Moul, John Lang, Denny Morin, Kevin Drechsler, Joe Gibbons, Jeric Gibbons and Allison Wolf.
