FAYETTEVILLE - Joseph Eugene Lanier, 96, of Wingate Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at his son's residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Faymont Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Chris Evans and the Rev. Bruce Gwyn. Burial will follow in Cumberland Memorial Gardens. The Lanier family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. today, prior to the service. Mr. Lanier was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Duplin County, son of the late James Lanier and Ada Simpson Lanier. He was a member of Cumberland Baptist Church in Fayetteville. He served in the Army during World War II. He is survived by three sons, Jerry Lanier of Mount Pleasant, Thomas Lanier of Parkton and Joseph Whaley of Clinton. He also is survived by his sister, Mary Lou Talbert of Radcliff, Ky.; grandchild, Monica Campbell; and great-grandchild, Emma Campbell. Memorials may be made to Faymont Baptist Church, 3663 Cumberland Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306. Gordon Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant is serving the Lanier family.
