ATHOL -- Arnold L. Gillespie, 78, died at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol after an illness.
He leaves his wife, Louise F. (Trombley) Gillespie, one son, Arnold (Junior) Gillespie of FL, three daughters, Michelle Gillespie of Fitchburg, Melinda Gillespie of Warwick, and Melissa Cherrier of Athol; three step-children, James Trombley, and his wife Iris of NH, Michael Trombley, and his wife Lucy of FL, Marcia English-Daniels and her husband James, of NY; 7 grandchildren, Jessica, Elizabeth, Elijah, Brian, Brittany, Caitlin, Brianna;
7 great-grandchildren, Serenity, Lizzie, Renzo, Vonte, Chancho, Avalon, and Ava; 4 step-grandchildren, and 6 step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, J.T. Gillespie, Willard Gillespie, and Curtis Gillespie, and two sisters, Cassandra Gillespie, and Betty Hubbard all of VA. He is also predeceased by a brother who died in Vietnam Roy Gillespie, and two sisters, Pearl Barnette and Liz Sykes.
Arnold was born in Tazewell, VA, on March 16, 1936, a son of the late Arthur and Carrie (Hall) Gillespie. He grew up in Tazewell, VA. where there wasn't much to do to earn a living other than farming. He joined the Army in 1954, serving three tours in Germany. He was on the DMZ in Korea and then went to FT. Carson, in Colorado, ending his military career in 1965. He worked at Rand Whitney Box, Co. in Leominster for two years. He then took a job at the Franklin Perkins School in Lancaster where he worked with the horses and doing maintenance work for 36 years.
Arnold like to fish, and taught his grandchildren to fish. He enjoyed riding around to the farms in the Athol area, to see the farm animals. He loved to see the Budweiser Clydesdales when they came to town.
GILLESPIE -- Calling hours will be on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 763 Mass Avenue, Lunenburg, MA 01462.
Funeral Services will be private.
