Eino A. Erkkila; 91

FITCHBURG -- Eino A. Erkkila, 91, a longtime Fitchburg resident, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, in the Lahey Clinic, Burlington, MA, after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 70 years, Rita Y. (Kirby) Erkkila and his daughter, Sharon A. Pietila, of Tewksbury, MA; one grandson, U.S.A.F. Captain David H. Marble, and his wife, Michelle, stationed at Robbins Air Force Base in GA; two granddaughters, Christie M. Pietila of Tewksbury and New York City, and Sara A. Pietila of Tewksbury; and eight great-grandchildren, Matthew, Stephen, Timothy, Rachel, Sarah, Joshua, John and Daniel Marble. He was predeceased by one sister, Aune Erkkila in 1995.

Mr. Erkkila was a Machinist at the Fitchburg Engineering Corporation for many years, until its closing in 1978, and then worked in the same capacity at Twin City Machine Co. until his retirement.

He was a member of the American Legion, Fitchburg Post #429, the Fitchburg Sportsman Club, and the N.R.A. He was a 1939 graduate of Fitchburg High School, and was a member of St. Bernard's Parish in Fitchburg. He was also an adult volunteer for the Young Performers Entertainment Group of Fitchburg and Billerica. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Eino was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre at the rank of Sergeant. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War ll Victory Medal.

He was born in Fitchburg, MA, on May 12, 1921, a son of the late Seelim A., and Ida K. (Mustanoja) Erkkila, and lived here all of his life, before moving to Tewksbury three years ago to live with his daughter and granddaughters.

ERKKILA -- Funeral Services for Eino will be held on Monday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, MA. Rev. Mary Ann Barry will be the Celebrant. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children's Health Care of Atlanta, C/O Egleston Hospital, 1405 Clifton Rd., NE, Atlanta, GA 30322-1062 or may be left at the Funeral Home.
