FITCHBURG, MA -- Eugene Joseph Driscoll, "Geeno", 85, of Fitchburg, MA, passed away suddenly at home early Friday morning, August 8, 2014.

He was born on January 5, 1929, the youngest of three sons of Thomas F. and Margaret (McKenna) Driscoll. He graduated in 1948 from St. Bernard's High School, where he participated in several sports and as the starting basketball center for four years.

Upon graduation, he joined and honorably served in the U.S. Navy for nine years. While in the Navy he played as a member of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet Zippers. Playing in a preliminary game before a Boston Celtic game at Madison Square Garden, he had the privilege of meeting and being photographed with NBA Hall of Fame inductee, Bob Cousy.

He enjoyed all sports, as a participant, coach and avid fan. He coached Biddy Basketball in Fitchburg Park Department Rec. League, Woman's Softball and was a player coach of the North Worcester County Special Olympics All Star Unified Softball Team that came in second in the World Special Olympic Summer Games in 1979.

He was formerly employed at the Fitchburg Gas & Electric Company, Suburban Propane Company in Marlboro, and retired from the Fitchburg Board of Health as Senior Housing Inspector in 1994.

He is survived by the "love" of his life, his wife, Joan Tousignant Driscoll, with whom as retirees, enjoyed many happy winters in Sarasota, FL. He is also survived by a daughter, Christy Foley and her husband, Kevin of Maryland, Judy Driscoll and her husband, Christopher Murphy, Kevin Driscoll and his wife, Jennifer Griffin Driscoll, all of Mass.; and two special grandsons, Sean and Joseph Foley of Maryland and several nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert F. Driscoll in 1992, and Thomas G. Driscoll in 2004.

Gene was a proud member and Past Grand Knight of the Joseph P. Keating, Council #99, Knights of Columbus, Life Member of the Eastwood Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Amvets and the SaraMana Eagles and Gulf Gate Moose Lodge #608 of Sarasota. He was also a life member of The Arc of Opportunity in North Central Mass, Fitchburg.

DRISCOLL -- Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 243 Water Street, Fitchburg. Geeno's funeral will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, from the funeral home with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Bernard at St. Camillus de Lellis Church, 333 Mechanic Street, Fitchburg. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in his memory to the Recreation Programs of The Arc of Opportunity, 558 Main Street, Fitchburg, MA 01420.
