Gary A. Vaillancourt
Retired Fitchburg firefighter; 64

FITCHBURG -- Gary A. Vaillancourt, 64, of Fitchburg, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born in Fitchburg on September 28, 1949, a son of Doris (Leger) Vaillancourt and the late Herbey Vaillancourt. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1969 and joined the Fitchburg Fire Department on December 2, 1974, working out of the Central Street Station on Group 4, Engine 3. Gary was made Lieutenant on March 14, 1979 and in the spring of 1980, moved to the Summer Street Station, where he worked on Engine 1 until his retirement in 2007. He also owned and operated Thermal Control Insulation Inc.

Gary was enlisted in the United States Army Reserves for several years. He belonged to the South Fitchburg Social Club and also the South End National Club, where he enjoyed spending time with his friends. Gary was a goalie in local men's hockey leagues for many years. In his spare time, he loved to watch east coast drag racing and NASCAR.

He leaves his wife; Linda (Rouleau) Vaillancourt of Fitchburg; mother, Doris (Leger) Vaillancourt of Fitchburg; children, Jason Vaillancourt of Athol, Melanie Robertson and her husband, Michael of Westminster, Justin Vaillancourt of Fitchburg; step-children, Shaun Pietila of Fitchburg, Jolene Garrity of Fitchburg; grandchildren, Brooklyn, Kennedy and Giana Vaillancourt of Athol, Connor and Ayla of Westminster; step-grandchildren, Colin Garrity of Leominster, Caiden Charon of Leominster; siblings, Patricia Legendre of Fitchburg, twin sister, Gail Rousseau and her husband, David of Fitchburg, Janice Desjean and her husband, Kenneth of Fitchburg, Janet Doughty and her husband, Randy of Fitchburg, Susan Horne and her husband, David of Mattapoisett, MA, Denise Curran and her husband, John of Fitchburg, Paula Ouellette of Fitchburg, Paul Vaillancourt and his wife, Susan of Fitchburg; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces.

In addition to his father Herbey Vaillancourt, Gary was also predeceased by his son, Joshua Vaillancourt who died on Sept. 2, 2000, and his brother-in-law, Calixte Legendre.

VAILLANCOURT -- The funeral will be held from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., on Monday, March 3 with a Mass in St. Joseph Church, 49 Woodland St. at 11 AM. Burial will be private. Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Sunday, March 2, from 3 to 6 PM.
