active at Leominster church; 87

LEOMINSTER -- John H. Ward III, 87, of Leominster, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, in Health Alliance Leominster Hospital.

Born on September 14, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of John H. Ward II and Helen (Rosemann) Ward. He graduated high school from Shenandoah Valley Academy in New Market, Virginia, and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Maryland. He then went on to graduate from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, with a Master's Degree in Education.

Throughout his life, Mr. Ward was a secondary and elementary school teacher and principal. He finished his 40-year teaching career at Browning Elementary School in South Lancaster, where he also ran the Ski Club for over 25 years. He attended the Leominster Seventh-day Adventist Church for 36 years, where he held various positions and leadership roles, including Elder and Adult Sabbath School Teacher. He also served on the Board of Trustees at Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster for a time.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth J. "Nancy" (McPhail) Ward of Leominster; his two sons, John M. Ward, and his wife, Laura, of Frederick, Maryland, Trent Ward, and his wife, Debbie, of Darien, Illinois; his daughter, Heidi Banks, and her husband, Glenn, of Barre, Vermont. He has four grandchildren, John L. Ward, Amy Ward, Alexis Banks, and Jonathan M. Ward.

WARD -- His funeral will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. in the Leominster Seventh-day Adventist Church, 445 Union Street, Leominster. Calling hours will be held Saturday, June 7, 2014, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West Street, Leominster.
