Kenneth A. Niemi
Fitchburg, MA native, decorated Army Vet; 84

VALRICO, Florida -- Kenneth Arthur Niemi, 84, of Valrico, Florida, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4.

He was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts to the late Urho and Nellie Niemi. He was an avid fan of Boston sports teams and Fitchburg High football. Ken played semi-pro football for the Fitchburg Tigers; he was a1947 graduate of Fitchburg High School.

Ken was a disabled veteran and proudly served his country as a member of the 3rd Ranger Company in Korea; when he was wounded he received the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, Combat Infantryman's Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea presidential Unit Citation Badge, Army of Occupation Medal with Japan clasp, United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree.

A special thanks goes to Leo and Rose Bissonnette and family for the many years of providing Ken a good home and care.

He is survived by his brother, Edwin Niemi and wife, Carolyn of Fitchburg, MA.

NIEMI -- A memorial mass will be held at Nativity Catholic Church of Brandon on Thursday, June 19 at 10:30 am, with inurnment to follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ken's name to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. BOX 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301.
