FITCHBURG -- Maurice O. Dery Jr., 88, of Fitchburg, passed away after an illness, on Saturday, September 21st, 2013, at UMass Memorial Healthcare, where he was surrounded by his loving family.

Maurice was born in Winchendon, and was the son of Maurice Dery and Matilda Morin. He moved to Fitchburg in 1955. Maurice graduated in 1942 from Murdock High School, Winchendon, where his artistic talents were captured in his design of the Murdock Blue Devils logo.

At age 17, he joined the United States Navy and served for four years. While serving his country, he was a plank owner on the USS Frank Knox and was present in Tokyo Bay when Japan formally surrendered on September 2, 1945, ending World War ll.

After the war, Maurice worked in the paper industry, and retired as a supervisor from James River Paper Company in 1986.

He spent his remaining time in Fitchburg as an avid golfer, sports fan, and family man. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He was preceded by his three siblings, Roland Dery of Luneburg, Marcella (Dery) Gallagher of Fitchburg, and Sister Matilda Marie Dery of Notre Dame du Lac, Worcester.

Maurice leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Madeline (Patenaude) Dery; his three children, Edith Dery of Foxboro, Nancy Taylor of Fitchburg, Maurice O. Dery III of Mahopac, New York; his five grandchildren, Wynn Taylor of New Bedford; Amy Ramos of Fitchburg; Ryan Dery of Foxboro; Madeline and Meryl Dery of Mahopac, NY; and one great-granddaughter, Lilly Palmer of Fitchburg.

Maurice, "Moe", was a member of Saint Josephs' Parish of Fitchburg.

DERY -- His funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 49 Woodland St., Fitchburg, MA. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Winchendon, MA. All relatives and friends are invited to attend. There are no calling hours.
