Thomas H. Shea, 87

LEOMINSTER -- Thomas H. Shea, 87, a resident of Manor on the Hill for the past two years, died Sunday May 4, in Legend Nursing Home, Gardner, MA, after an extended illness.

His wife of 60 years, Theresa (Girouard) Shea, died in 2007.

He leaves one niece, Kathy Simses Guiles, and her husband, Ernest, and their children, Kenneth and Katie of Livingston, NJ; three nephews, Richard Simses, and his wife, Corrine, and their children, Richard and Jacqui of The Woodlands, TX, James Simses, and his wife, Diane, and their son, James of Stratford, CT and Thomas Simses, and his wife, Vicki, and their children, Justin and Ashley of Guilford, CT; a brother-in-law, Kenneth L. Dumont, and his wife, Diane Stone of Westminster, MA.

Tom was a School Teacher and Principal in the Fitchburg School System at various Fitchburg Schools and in 1956 moved to the Albany, NY area to take a position in the New York State Department of Higher Education.

He and his wife, Theresa, lived in Burnt Hills, NY, where they were involved in volunteering in the community at the local soup kitchen and library. He was a volunteer fireman in Burnt Hills and was a member of the Knights of Columbus there.

He was a 1944 graduate of Fitchburg High School and played football there. Following his graduation he served in the U.S. Air force during World War II as a Private First Class. After his honorable discharge he later graduated from the University of Mass and Harvard University and received a Doctorate of Education from Teachers College at Columbia University.

He was born in Fitchburg, on May 8, 1926 a son of the late Arthur and Helen Shea and lived in Fitchburg before moving to Burnt Hills, NY. in 1956.

SHEA -- Tom's Funeral will be celebrated on Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m. in the Pieta Chapel of St. Joseph's Cemetery, 486 Clarendon St., Fitchburg. Father Bill Champlin, Pastor of St. Edward the Confessor Parish will officiate.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Metro West Visiting Nurses and Hospice, 85 Lincoln St., #307, Framingham, MA 01702.

The Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, has been entrusted to direct Funeral arrangements.
