LEOMINSTER -- William Hugh Waye, 87, of Leominster, MA, formerly of Sudbury and Lunenburg, MA passed away August 19, 2013 at Leominster Crossings Assisted Living surrounded by his family. He was born June 15, 1926 in Lunenburg, MA to James and Georgie (Drummond) Waye and grew up on Clover Hill Farm. Bill married Vellamo Wirkkala in 1951 and was a devoted father to their two children. After Vel's death he married Lillian (Mellett) Schultz in 1995 and enjoyed his second chapter with the Schultz family.

Bill graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1944 and served in the Navy during WWII as a Radioman in Air and Sea Rescue off the Azores. After graduating from Univ. of Massachusetts with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1951, Bill enjoyed a career at Raytheon. He primarily worked in Wayland, MA, but due to his reputation as an excellent troubleshooter, Raytheon sent Bill to work on many different radar projects around the world. Bill loved exploring these different countries in his free time and continued to enjoy traveling after his retirement in 1989.

He was widely respected and loved for his ability to fix anything for family and friends. Bill was also well known for his athletic ability and love of sports, especially cycling, skiing, boating, baseball and hockey. He shared his love and knowledge of sports by coaching his son's and grandsons' teams. Throughout his life he enjoyed playing cards with his childhood buddies and, more recently, with his new friends at Leominster Crossing. His upbeat spirit, sense of humor and generous heart were loved by all who knew him.

Bill is survived by his wife of 18 years, Lillian Waye; his two children, Sandra Waye-Lawton and her husband, Robert Lawton of Plymouth, MA, Wendell Waye and his wife Cindy of Marietta, GA; four grandchildren, Alex Lawton and his wife Kate Dineen, Ben Lawton, Ryan and Sarah Waye; three stepchildren, Judy Saunders of Wynnewood, PA, Kathy Lee of Leominster, MA, Richard Schultz and his wife, Denise of Fitchburg, MA; six step-grandchildren, Gregory, Kelly and Zachary Schultz, Eric, Bryce and Kurtis Lee; four step-great-grandchildren, Kaiden and Makayla Schultz and Kyle and Miley Lee.

Bill was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Vellamo (Wirkkala) Waye; his parents, Georgie and James Waye; his brother, Wendell Waye and his sister, Gloria Knight.
