Alfred Hendry Trafford

Cocoa, FL

Al Trafford died on April 27, 2014, in his 100th year at home in his beloved Cocoa. He was a third generation Brevard County resident. Born to Alfred Roy and Georgia Pearl (Hendry) Trafford on October 19, 1914 in Cocoa, he was predeceased by Margot Ahlstrom, his wife of 54 years in 1995. He is survived by his daughter, Margot Hester and her husband Tim of Cocoa Beach, and granddaughter, Britta Waller of Brantford, Ontario. He was also predeceased by his brother, Robert and dear friend, Katherine Vernay Miller.

Educated in the Brevard County Public School System, Al later attended University of Florida College of Business Administration from 1933 until 1938. He has been in the real estate business all of his life at Trafford Realty, founded by his father in 1917, serving as a realtor, broker, President and Chairman, and was Florida Realtor of the Year in 1962.

Some of his other accomplishments include: Founder, Director, Vice President and later Chairman of the Board of First Federal Savings and Loan of Cocoa, as well as First Federal Savings and Loan of Orlando, subsequently named The First F.A., serving from 1982 until 1991. He was President of Brevard County Board of Realtors twice; as well as President of the North-Central Brevard Board of Realtors, and also served on the Board of Governors of the Florida Association of Realtors. He was the founder and Director of Freeport Savings and Loan Association, Freeport, Bahamas, Director and Chairman of Underwriters National Assurance Company, Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a member of the Cocoa Planning and Zoning Board from 1959 until 1989, Director of the Cocoa-Rockledge Country Club from 1938 until 1952, a member of the Board of Governors at the Indian River Yacht Club, a Director of the Eau Gallie Yacht Club from 1965 until1970, serving as Commodore in 1969.

Al was a Director of the Florida Chamber of Commerce from 1969 until 1985, serving as Director Emeritus from 1985 to date. He was a Director of the Cocoa Beach and Area Chamber of Commerce, past Director Committee of 100. In 1991, he received the Distinguished Service Award, Cocoa Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1992, he was a Laureate at the Business Hall of Fame, Junior Achievement and also active in many civic and charitable institutions. Al loved Brevard County and was proud to be a Floridian.

Al's service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 4 Church Street, Cocoa, FL on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 4:00 pm. A private family graveside will be held at Georgiana Cemetery on Merritt Island, FL.
