Charles Allen Ruckman

Charles Allen Ruckman, 67, of Palm Bay, FL, passed away peacefully Monday, August 11, 2014, at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL. Charlie was born in Evansville, IN, on April 15, 1947 to Walter "Bud" Ruckman and Emily (Waters) Ruckman. He graduated from North High School in 1965 and the University of Evansville in 1969, where he majored in journalism, played varsity tennis, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. For the next two years, Charlie served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Thailand as a writer and photographer for the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Following his honorable discharge from service, he returned to Evansville and utilized his education and numerous talents in such positions as reporter for the Evansville Courier and Press, Public Relations Director of United Way of Southwestern Indiana, photographer at Donahue Studios, and printer at Garrett Printing and Scot Lad Foods. Charlie moved to Florida in the early 1980s and settled in Palm Bay. He retired from Florida Today newspaper in 2007, after 18 years of service.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father in 1968, step-father Jack Brinkley in 2007, and mother in 2008.
Survivors include his beloved and devoted wife of 24 years, Linda (Ploeger) Ruckman of Palm Bay; step-son Randy Jones of Josephine, PA; sisters, Donna Ruckman-Nave (Claude Nave) of Evansville, IN, and Anita Meyer Layton (Robert) of Summit Point, WV; step-sisters, Jill Brinkley of Evansville, IN, and Janet Mominee (John) of Platteville, WI; niece, Krista Beshear and children, Avery and Della Gardner of Chandler, IN; nephews, Todd Beshear and children, Jake and Katie of Evansville, IN; Ryan Meyer of Melbourne, FL; and Than Meyer and son Ty of Cocoa Beach, FL.
Services were held in Evansville.
