Claire Harrison Courtney

Melbourne Beach, FL

Claire Harrison Courtney, 87, of Melbourne Beach, FL., died peacefully in her sleep on October 24th, 2013, only to wake up in Jesus Christ's loving arms.

Mrs. Courtney was born in West Springfield, MA., in May, 1926, the only child of Hector & Clara deMontigny. After growing up in Manchester Connecticut and graduating from the University of Connecticut in 1948 she married Albert W. Harrison, Jr. later that year. They had four children and Claire settled into her role of mother and homemaker. Albert's military career took the family across the United States and to Europe. After Albert retired from the Air Force but continued in his old job as a civil servant, he was transferred to Patrick Air Force Base in 1972. By this time two of her children had left home, freeing her time up and allowing her to become more involved in the community. Claire immediately became entrenched in the town of Melbourne Beach, FL., which was always dear to her heart. A founding and active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, she was an Extraordinary Minister and a devoted minister of the sick, delivering the sacrament to those who were homebound or in assisted living facilities for almost 40 years. A former President of the Melbourne Beach Women's Club, Claire also was active in local politics, having served on the Melbourne Beach Planning & Zoning board, and for years as an Elections Clerk. After all her children had moved off to college, Claire became a licensed real estate broker, working for Sunland Realty and Coldwell Banker. Three years after being widowed, during a not-so-chance meeting at bible study, Claire met the next love of her life, John Courtney, whom she married in 1989. Claire was always giving of herself thoughout the community and her love and good works will be greatly missed.

She is survived by son Jeffrey Harrison (Kate), of Worley, ID., daughter Tacy Daniel (Mike), of Indialantic, FL., son Michael Harrison (Stacey), of Viera, FL., step sons John Courtney, Jr., (Jenny), of Palm Bay, FL., Patrick Courtney (Lisa), of Brandon, FL., Tom Courtney, of Tampa, FL., and Mike Courtney (Sally), of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., along with 13 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands Albert Harrison and John Courtney, and by son Christopher Harrison.

Calling hours are Monday, November 4th, 2013, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home in Melbourne. A Mass celebrating her life is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5th, 2013, at 10:00 am, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Melbourne Beach, FL.
