Dorothy "Dotty" Ann Whitman, 76, passed away February 21, 2013.
Born in San Pedro, CA on November 10, 1936 into a Navy family, she traveled across the country to Portsmouth, Virginia, with her mother, father and three older brothers. While in Portsmouth, the family learned of their father's death during WWII.
As a young teen, she and her mother moved to Bladensburg, MD after her three brothers all joined the Air Force. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in the Lucy Webb Hayes School of Nursing in Washington, DC. During her schooling there, she met her husband to be, Donald R. "Buz" Whitman, who was a student at the University of Maryland. After her graduation and certification as a Registered Nurse, she and Buz were married on April 10, 1959. After his graduation and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force, they arrived at their first duty station where their first child, Linda Marie was born followed by about 17 months later, with the birth of their son, Donald Patrick.
Traveling around our country and to various overseas assignments, she was always active in Officers' Wives Club activities, serving on several boards and doing volunteer work in thrift shops. She also found time to practice nursing, working in pediatric clinics and doctors' offices.
After arriving at Patrick AFB in late 1984, she became an active member of the Patrick Women's Golf Association. She also worked part-time as a Starter at the Manatee Cove Golf Course for 17 years.
She was predeceased by her mother and all three brothers.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 54 years, her two children, her two beautiful granddaughters and two precious great-grand- children.
She fought a gallant battle against the ravages of cancer and heart disease for years. She will be treasured in our thoughts and prayers.
Services will be private.
As her husband told her on their 50th anniversary, "You are always on my mind and forever in my heart."
