Viera, FL

Harry Lloyd Benson Jr., former Palm Beach County educator, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014 from complications after knee-replacement surgery in Viera, FL. He was 76. Benson was born and raised in Delray/Boynton Beach, FL in 1937. While attending the University of Florida he married his college sweetheart, Martha. He worked for 31 years for Palm Beach County schools as a well-loved and respected teacher, coach, Dean, Principal and administrator. In 1991 he moved to Conway, NH as School Superintendent. In 1998, he and Martha settled in Viera, where he loved his part-time starter job and friends at Turtle Creek Golf Club.

Benson is survived by his devoted wife, Martha; his daughter, Diane Benson Harrington (Scott) of Madison, Wis.; his grandchildren, Kristina and Kathy Benson, and Jack and Ben Harrington; his sister, Myrtle Calbert, and brother Burt Benson; as well as daughter-in-law, Penny Brown Benson. He was prededeased by his parents, Harry and Berneice Benson Sr., brother, Marvin Benson, and, in November 2013, by his son, David Benson.
