On July 17, 2013, James (Jim) Curtis Thurston, Sr., was welcomed into the arms of his Heavenly Father. Born in Louisville, KY, he was the son of the late Gordon Dawson Thurston, the late Loella Stone and his late step-father, Shelby Sone.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Dody; his beloved children: daughter, Suzanne Marie Thurston; and son, James Curtis Thurston, Jr. (Bridget); two beautiful and wonderful grandchildren, Christian Curtis Thurston and Jenavieve Suzanne Thurston; his two brothers, Gene Brady Thurston and Dennis Shelby Stone; aunt, Peggy Koppel; uncle, Lloyd George; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
After high school, he served in the US Marine Corp, then attended school at the University of Florida. After college, he landed his dream job as an Engineer at Kennedy Space Center. His aerospace career lasted 46 years. He worked on the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle Programs and loved everyday of it.
He spent his retirement volunteering at the WarBird Museum in Titusville and restoring computers for children in the Brevard County School System. He loved flying, airplanes, sports cars and his family.
Service will be July 26, 2013 at 3:00pm at Georgianna United Methodist Church, 3925 S. Tropical Trail, Merritt Island, FL. Entombment will be private and held at a later date.
