Jerry E. Hansen, 85, of Cocoa Beach, FL, passed away peacefully at Farrington House Assisted Living, Merritt Island, FL on May 4, 2013.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Charlotte; son, Dane; granddaughter, Sasha; sisters, Jari Davis and JoJean Loflin; and a brother, Jim Hansen.
Jerry was born on April 2, 1928 in Los Angeles, CA, graduated from Oakland High in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the Navy where he served time on Guam and then on the USS General A. E. Anderson. After the Navy, family matters took him to Salt Lake City, UT, where he had several different jobs before enrolling at the University of Utah studying Law; he later transferred to U.S.C. in Los Angeles. Just prior to finishing law school and taking the Bar, he decided law was not for him. He worked in the bar business for awhile before he journeyed to the 1960 Winter Olympics in Lake Tahoe where he discovered his love for gambling, which led to a job dealing casino games for several years.
He moved to Oakland, CA to take care of his ailing mother, where he became a joint owner in a neighborhood saloon. Upon her passing, he returned to Lake Tahoe and then landed in Reno, NV to pursue a successful career in the gambling business. In 1998, he joined Sterling Casino Lines in Cape Canaveral.
Jerry's final resting place will be the South Florida, VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL. He did not want a memorial service, he wanted a party. There will be a Wake on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in the lounge at Discovery Beach Resort, Cocoa Beach, starting at 3:00 PM to celebrate his life.
Arrangements were made by Beckman- Williamson Funeral Home, Cocoa Beach, FL.
