Marie Ethel Griffin Numann died at Autumn House, a home for Alzheimer's patients, in Viera, FL on April 4, 2013 at the age of 80. Marie was born on the dining room table in the home of her parents Ethel and William Griffin in Halcottsville, NY, on August 22, 1932.
Marie started school there in a one room schoolhouse. She then went to Roxbury Central School, NY graduating in 1949, in a class of twelve, which included her future husband, Guy.
Marie was active in sports and played the clarinet. She was selected for the honor of going to Girl's State. She graduated from SUNY at Oneonta, NY, becoming a teacher. Following graduation, she taught fifth grade in Margaretville, NY for one year. She married Guy Numann July 11, 1954 in Roxbury, NY at the Methodist church, and then moved to Rochester, NY with him. She worked in the Indian Landing school as a fifth grade school teacher until giving birth to her son, William, and moving to East Rochester. While there, she did substitute teaching and raised her family.
The family moved to Corwin Road in Rochester where the children went and graduated from the Penfield schools. Marie then split her living between Pittsford, NY, Vero Beach, Florida, and Indialantic, Florida. As Guy was transferred to work in Florida, she still wished to spend significant time with her friends, children and grandchildren in Rochester. After Guy's retirement, they lived in Webster, NY and Vero Beach. She and Guy would travel with friends and relatives by boat between the homes in the spring and fall. Every summer for ten years, she and Guy would take a vacation with the children and grandchildren. The highlight was a trip to Europe and attendance at a World Cup soccer game.
Marie's fondest recreational activities were bowling and playing bridge. She loved watching and attending sporting events, particularly if her children or grandchildren were playing. Marie was always devoted to and very proud of her accomplished family. She supported Guy in perpetuating the Numann family name with charitable gifts to SUNY Oneonta, RPI, Princeton University and Presentation High School in California. They funded the start of the Greater Roxbury Learning Initiative Corp.[GRLIC] which started a community radio station, WIOX and initiated funding for a future Technology Center at the school in Roxbury. Some funding for a future endowed chair at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY for Guy's sister, Patricia was also provided.
Marie is survived by her husband, Guy of 58 years. He sold both homes and moved into a motor home to be near Marie in Viera. His time is spent in Florida and New York, and visiting friends and family. Her son, William, lives in Campbell, CA with wife, Mary Beth. Their daughter, Taylor, graduated from Princeton University.
