Tommie Knight, 85, passed away on Wednesday, March 20th in Merritt Island. Tommie was born November 10, 1927 in Vernon, Texas. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1956, with a Bachelors degree in physics.
He married Wanda Lou Harris in 1953. She preceded him in death in 2004. He is survived by their three sons, Tommy, Bill and Joe.
Tommie worked as a roughneck in the oil fields of Texas. He joined Merchant Marines for two years before he was old enough to enlist in the Navy. He served four years as a radar technician during the Korean War. He moved to Merritt Island in 1961, and worked as an Electrical engineer for NASA, working the Delta, Atlas and Titan programs. In 1980, he moved with Wanda to Germany and worked on the Spacelab program in partnership with the European Space Agency for five years. Tommie retired from NASA in 1988.
Tommie enjoyed traveling and history. He combined the two with trips to historical places throughout the world.
Memorial service to be held on April 7 at 1:00 PM in Merritt Island at the ELKS lodge, 1520 Sykes Creek Pkwy.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice "VITAS Community Connection", 4450 W. Eau Gallie Blvd., suite 250, Melbourne, FL 32934 in his honor.
