Willis A. Brown

Dr. Willis Alston Brown, III , 82, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2013, at the Skilled Care Center of Indian River Estates, Vero Beach, Florida.
He was born in Sarasota FL, raised in Tampa and graduated from Hillsborough H.S. He attended Emory University( Phi Kappa Alpha) and The University of Miami where he was in the first graduating class (1956) of the School of Medicine. He named their yearbook, The Synapse. Post-medical school internship was at Duval Medical Center in Jacksonville, followed by an Air Force assignment as a Captain at Shaw AFB, SC , and a pediatric residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami.
The rest of his medical career was spent in Titusville, Florida (1961-1996), where he established Jess Parrish Hospital's first pediatric ward. In 1972 he served as Medical Director of the N. Brevard County Health Department after attending Johns Hopkins University. He then earned a second Board Certification in Family Practice and enjoyed private practice until his retirement in 1996. He served as Chief of Staff, Chief of various Departments and served on many committees at Jess Parrish Medical Center. He was a founding board member of the Normandy School for children with disabilities, served on the Board of the YMCA, supported health initiatives at the local schools, and was a team physician for the Astronaut H.S. football team. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and Past President of the Titusville Rotary Club.
He with his wife Shirley moved to Indian River Estates in Vero Beach in 2007. He was a tenor in the First United Methodist Church Choir, the Treasure Coast Chorale and also sang with various groups at Indian River Estates. He also served as a Board Member of IRE-East Resident's Association.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Shirley, sons David and Michael of Titusville, daughter Michele Mason of Stuttgart, Germany, brother Thomas K. Brown of Denton, Texas and three grandchildren.
Services: Visitation is at 10 a.m. on October 30, 2013 at North Brevard Funeral Home in Titusville, followed by a graveside service at 11 am. at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Titusville. A guestbook is available at northbrevardfuneralhome.com.
