ANDREW J. BROOKS, 80, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013, at Visiting Nurse Hospice Home. Born in Fort Wayne, he was the son of the late Ivan and Lucille (Romano) Brooks. Andrew joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Alaska. He was quickly promoted to chef for the officers. He auditioned and was granted permission to entertain the troops playing music throughout Alaska. In the 1960's, he and his wife, Audrey, owned and operated Brooks Smorgasbord and Drive-In in Garrett, Ind. until 1978. He then continued his musical career by playing steel guitar for Joe Taylor and the Indiana Red Birds and many other country bands. He shared the stage at Buck Lake Ranch with famous artists such as George Jones, Loretta Lynn, and Conway Twitty, to name a few. Recently, he had been playing music with numerous other bands and Audiences Unlimited, entertaining seniors in hospitals and nursing homes. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Audrey; sons, Rick (Sharon) Brooks of Fort Wayne and Jeffery (Susan) Brooks of Zionsville, Ind.; grandchildren, Benjamin, Meghan, Bryan, Thomas, and Erin; and his beloved Labrador retriever. A Memorial service will be held at a later date. Preferred memorials to the Allen County S.P.C.A. or Visiting Nurse Hospice Home.
