CHARLES LEE "BUCK" BUCKALEW, 92, of St. Simons Island, Ga., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Southeast Georgia Health System of Brunswick. Buck was a native of Mattoon, Ill. residing in Glynn County since 1953. Born the Oct. 2, 1921, he was a son of the late Dorothy Anna Meyer Buckalew and Charles Lee Buckalew. He married Marge Conley Buckalew in 1949, in the City of Long Beach, Calif. He and Marge had been married for 64 years and they were presently living in the house they built in 1958 in Kelvin Grove, St. Simons Island, Ga. Buck was a retired veteran of the United States Air Force (U.S.A.F. - 1940 to 1963). He served in U.S.A.F. European Theatre during World War II and the Korean Conflict; retiring at the rank of Master-Sargeant, after 10 years service Air Technical Advisor for the 224th Radio Relay Squadron of St. Simons Island, Ga. Charles was a founding member of Optimist Club, St. Simons Island, Ga.; active volunteer with American Red Cross; member of Golden Isles Lodge 707; member of St. Simons Island American Legion Post 166; member of the V.F.W., St. Simons Island Post; member of the National Association of Uniformed Service (NAUS); member of Brunswick Shrine Club and the Masonic Lodge of St. Simons Island, Ga. for 50 years; and member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church of St. Simons Island. Buck was a charter member (1959) and life member of the St. Simons Island Optimist Club. He was a past President and served as Secretary-Treasurer for over 30 years. He served six terms as Lt. Governor and in 2000 was honored as Optimist of the Year by the Georgia District of Optimist International. Surviving are his wife, Marge Conley Buckalew of St. Simons Island, Ga.; sister, Dolores Buckalew Cole of Fort Wayne; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and relatives throughout the U.S.A. and Canada. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lee Buckalew and Bonnie Meyer-Buckalew. Memorial service is 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2801 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, Ga., with Pastor Paul Elbert officiating.
