DAYTON J. HENSEL, 91, passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Visiting Nurse in Fort Wayne. Born Feb. 23, 1922, he attended schools in Kentucky, Illinois and Florida, graduating from Angola High School. He earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Tri State University. He honorably served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII, spending two years in London, England at the Command Headquarters of U.S. Naval Operations in Europe in the Communications and Intelligence Divisions. He worked for General Motors Allisons in Indianapolis and General Electric in Fort Wayne. He was an agent with Northwestern Mutual LIfe Insurance, worked for the Steuben County Zoning Board of Appeals, was the owner of the Pokagon Motel, and Hensel Road Builders. He was a member of the Lions Club, Angola, the American Legion, Orland, American Owners and Pilots Association (still held a current pilots license when he passed.) National Hotel and Motel Association, Road Builders Association, Indiana Sheriff's Association, Studebaker Drivers Club,Civil Air Patrol and Angola Lodge No. 236 F. & A. M. He was active flying many owned airplanes, skiing, boating, building houses, and traveling with two recreational vehicle clubs. He married Marcella Gotsch January 29, 1944, in Cambridge, Mass. she survives. Also surviving are son, Michael Dayton (Michele) Hensel of Valparaiso; daughters, Deborah Jeanne (Steve) Hekman of West Olive, Mich. and Heidi Ellen (Jeff) Fields of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren, Tina Hensel, Heather Heminger, Krista Jenkins, Jennifer Russel, Thomas Elliott and Jaime Renee Fields; and 11 great-grandchildren, Zachary Michael, Seth David and Cameryn Leigh Jenkins; Kasey Marie, Page Ireland and Noah Tiberius Hensel; Caleb Michael and Caden George Heminger; Drake Wyatt, Austin Dayton, and Brooke Cienna Russell. He was preceded in death by daughter, Barbara Lynn Hensel who died of leukemia; parents, Ray W. and Pollyanna (Jasper) Hensel; and brother, Wynn Hensel. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road with calling one hour prior. Rev. Dr. Richard Davis officiating. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Riley Children's Hospital, CTN Transport or St Vincent de Paul Transport.
