EDWARD E. HELMKE, 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 28, 2014, at Coventry Meadows, Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne, Ed was a World War II Army veteran. He worked for Rea Magnet Wire for 35 years, retiring in 1986. He was an active member and Trustee at First Missionary Church for many years. Ed was very handy at building things. That gift led him to build his own home which he lived in until his home going. He and his wife attended the South Side Basketball games for 35 years and many University of Michigan football games. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed spending time with his family. Surviving are his sons, Gary Helmke of Fort Wayne and Larry Helmke of Portland, Ore.; granddaughters, Alex Ann and Kylee Lee Helmke; brothers, Robert Helmke of Fort Wayne and Howard Helmke of Columbia City; and sister Trudy Freeman of Fort Wayne. He was preceded in death by parents, Otto and Alvina Helmke; and wife, Phyllis "Fuzzy" Helmke. Service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield, with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial in Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to First Missionary Church.
