REV. ELVIN L. MILLER, 91, passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2014, in Fort Wayne. Born in Portland, Ind., Elvin served as a pastor with the United Methodist Church for 42 years. He knew from a young age that he wanted to serve God. Elvin graduated from Burris High School in Muncie, continued his education at Earlham College, and completed his Masters from Northwestern University where he met the love of his life, Tracy Roper. During his early ministry, he was pastor of churches in Albany, Ind. and Jimtown, Ind. Later, he served Hennipen Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis for 11 years and was instrumental in starting the Koinonia Retreat Center. Elvin developed and implemented the continuing education program for the United Methodist North Indiana Conference. He was an avid amateur radio operator for nearly 80 years (call sign W9HF) and was a talented magician. Surviving are his daughterd, Cathy Kuhwede of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Carol (John) Dunfee of Morgantown, Ind.; son, Mark (Lori) Miller of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Erin (Ryan) Smith, Lars Kuhwede, Karsten Kuhwede, Rene (Jeff) Stahl, Rachel Moore, Theresa Miller, and Benjamin Miller; great-grandchildren, Braden, Peyton, Ethan, and Nolan; and his dearest friend, Dr. Jerry Schindel. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Theresa "Tracy" Miller; parents, Galen and Mary Miller; son-in-law, Eric Kuhwede; and sister, Mildred Loundsbury. Service is 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church, 300 E. Wayne St., with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road. Entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Soup Kitchen.
