MOST REVEREND JOHN MICHAEL D'ARCY, 80, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013. Born Aug. 18, 1932, in Boston, Mass., he was the only son of Irish immigrants the late Michael John and Margaret (Moran) D'Arcy. He began preparation for the priesthood in September of 1949 at St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Mass. He studied in Rome at the Angelicum from 1965 to 1968 and received his doctorate in spiritual theology in 1968. He served as spiritual director and professor of spiritual theology at St. John's Seminary from 1968 to 1985. Bishop D'Arcy was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop of Boston on Feb. 11, 1975 and was appointed Vicar for Spiritual Development for the archdiocese at the same time. He also continued to serve as a spiritual director at St. John's Seminary. On July 21, 1981, Bishop D'Arcy was appointed Regional Bishop for the northern area of the Archdiocese of Boston, known as the Lowell Region. Bishop D'Arcy continued to direct the archdiocesan Office of Spiritual Development. On Feb. 26, 1985, Bishop D'Arcy was appointed eighth Bishop of Fort Wayne - South Bend and was installed on May 1, 1985. He divided the diocese into six vicariates, each with an episcopal vicar, for better pastoral care. He is survived by two sisters, Sister Anne D'Arcy (a Sister of St. Joseph) and Joan (husband, Hugh) Sheridan; brother-in-law, Vito; and several nephews, a niece, grand nieces, and grand nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Caprio. Mass of Christian Burial is noon Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1122 S. Calhoun St., Fort Wayne, with visitation from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Reception of the body and morning prayer begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb 7, 2013, at the church (visitation will be held throughout the day), with the Rosary recited at 5 p.m. and evening prayer at 7 p.m. Reception of the body and morning prayer begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St., South Bend, Ind. (visitation will be held throughout the day), with a Rosary recited at 5 p.m. and Mass of Transferal at 7 p.m. Entombment in the crypt of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Fort Wayne. Preferred memorials are to: The Seminary Education Fund, The Priest Pension Fund, The Bishop D'Arcy Catholic Education Fund, any one of the four Diocesan Catholic High Schools, Women's Care Center, Christ Child Society, St. John the Baptist Parish, Fort Wayne, St. Monica Parish, Mishawaka, Ind.
