LEWIS LESTER ATKINSON, 94, died Saturday, April 12, 2014 at his home in Hunt-ertown. He was born June 15, 1919 in Oxford, Ind. He was a proud graduate of Purdue University as a Mechanical Engineer. He married Jeanne Mahoney Oct. 18, 1941 and left soon after for Europe and World War II. He served in the Army as Captain in the 8th Artillery Division and was awarded both the Bronze and Silver stars. After the war, the couple moved to Fort Wayne where he worked as an Engineer mainly at Shambaugh & Sons until his retirement. In 1959 he moved with his wife and three children to Huntertown, where he was an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and a volunteer little league coach. Surviving are his son, Harold D. of Huntertown; daughters, Rebecca S. Atkinson-Haley of Oxford, Ind. and Jane Bockhaus of Minnesota; along with six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1502 East Wallen Road, with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 E. Dupont Road with a rosary at 3:30 p.m. Burial at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Oxford, Ind. with a 3 p.m. graveside service Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Memorials to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School tuition endowment fund.
