MILDRED SHAFFER, 92, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home, Archbold, Ohio. Born on Aug. 30, 1920, on the family farm outside Avilla, Ind., she was a daughter of Lawrence and Mabel (Bixler) Rawles. She graduated from Rome City High School, (Indiana) in 1938 and attended college for two years. Following graduation Mildred held several jobs, but when there were no prospective jobs where her family lived she moved to Fort Wayne to find work. During the years she resided in Fort Wayne, she worked in a variety of restaurants and retail stores, finally being hired at Sears Roebuck where she met her husband, George. They had been married 62 years until he preceded her in death in 2008. She is survived by five children, Francis (Rose) Shaffer of Adrian, Mich., Elizabeth (Thomas) Belenchia of Spartanburg, S.C., Mary (Al) Compton of Owosso, Mich., Jeri (Charlie) Brown of Fort Wayne, and Susan (Bob) Gilbert of Delta, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; one brother, Lewis (Virginia) Rawles; four nephews; and one niece. She was preceded in death by her husband George; parents; and brother, Harold Rawles. Funeral service is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Fairlawn Haven Chapel, Lutz Road, Archbold, Ohio, with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Private family graveside service is Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at Floral Grove Cemetery, Pioneer, Ohio.
