RAYMOND HOOVER, 90, of Goshen, passed away early on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Green croft Health care. He had been in declining health for the past couple of years. Born Oct. 19, 1921, in Mansfield, Ohio, he was the son of Jesse B. and Lucy (Darkwood) Hoover. He married Lura M. Sherman on June 16, 1945, in New Paris; she survives. A lifetime resident of the area, he taught school in Leesburg, Nappanee and at Towncrest Junior High, Goshen. He served 17 years as resident director at Camp Mack and as pastor at Maple Grove Church of the Brethren for seven years. Following his retirement, he worked for Choice Books for 13 years. He was a graduate of Manchester College, Goshen College and University of Saint Francis; and attended classes at Bethany Seminary. He was a member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren and Elkhart County Retired Teachers' Association. Also surviving are a daughter, Beth (Fred) Clauser of Berne; a son, John A. (Cindy) Hoover of Sharpsburg, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Lynn (Larry) Hoover of Detroit, Mich.; a half sister, Sue Ellen (Jack) Reiber of Uniontown, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Vivian Hoover; a son, Larry D. Hoover, in 2010; and two brothers, Russell H. and Merle W. Hoover. Memorial service is 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Goshen City Church of the Brethren, with Pastors Bev Weaver and Steve Norton officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A private family burial will be in Whitehead Cemetery, New Paris.
