WILHO R. "BILL" ROY, 89, of Lake of the Woods near Hudson, died on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Lutheran Life Villages, Ken dallville. Born April 23, 1924, in Pike River, Minn., he was a son of Alfred Roy and Maria (Ketola) Roy. After high school, he graduated from Tri State University, Angola with a degree in electrical engineering. He honorably served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. During his time in the Army, he worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the wartime predecessor organization to the CIA. He married Catherine Liacopoulos on May 5, 1951, in Toledo, Ohio; she survives in Lake of the Woods. He was the Director of Communications for Indiana & Michigan Power for 30 years. He later served 10 years as the project manager for American Electric Power's Ultra High Voltage Test Station, North Liberty, Ind. He retired from American Electric Power in 1985. He was a member and past president of the Kendallville Kiwanis. During his time in the Kiwanis, he was voted 'The Kiwanian of the Year'. He was also a member of the Kendallville V.F.W. Post 2749 and the Kendallville American Legion Post 86. He also served as the past president of the Anthony Wayne Toastmasters Club 521, in Fort Wayne. He loved spending time with his dog, Cody, especially taking him around the lake on the pontoon boat or around his property on the golf cart. He also enjoyed astronomy, socializing with family and friends, traveling around the world and playing his harmonica. He was an avid Indiana University basketball fan. He liked the challenge of fixing things around the house himself. Anything from motors to appliances to televisions. He went from one household project to another. He took a great interest in the grandchildren's education. Most recently, he enjoyed listening to his grandson, Alex on his Ball State radio program every Monday. Also surviving are one son, Steve Roy of Lake of the Woods; one daughter, Mary Roy-Bassett (Dr. Michael) of LaPorte, Ind.; three grandchildren, Allison Bassett of Lafayette, Ind., Scott Bassett of Fishers, Ind. and Alex Bassett of LaPorte, Ind.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Gertrude Hendrickson. Funeral service is 3 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, at Hite Funeral Home, Kendallville, with Military Honors immediately following the funeral service. Father James Stoyle officiating. Visitation is from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial in Wright Cemetery near Stroh, Ind.
