Charles G. McLaughlin

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Charles G. McLaughlin 'Chuck', 92, died on April 27, 2014, at Gosnell House in Scarborough.

He was born in South Berwick on April 7, 1922, to Frederick and Alice (Swasey) McLaughlin. Third in a family of six, he had three brothers and two sisters.

Chuck graduated from Berwick Academy in the Class of 1939. He was active in academics, athletics, and school politics. Chuck was a three season athlete playing on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. He was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of New Hampshire.

At the University of New Hampshire, he majored in political science. He also played basketball and baseball in college and was a member of ROTC (Reserve Officer's Training Course).

In 1942, Chuck attended midshipman's school at University of Notre Dame where he received a commission as ensign, married Marcia Chick, and readied for his tour of duty with the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific Theater of Operations for a year and a half. His special duty was loading and balancing combat aircraft. He felt that his best experience was becoming acquainted with practically every Pacific island and the people that lived there. At the end of his service, Chuck had reached the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

After the war, Chuck operated his own accounting business, earned his real estate license, and worked in sales. He began his sales career first in specialty foods with Cross & Blackwell, then 25 years with Dow Chemical Pharmaceuticals.

Chuck enjoyed his retirement. He played tennis several days a week into his mid-eighties, attended real estate and stock market seminars, worked for the Berwick Academy Alumni Council, and spent many happy hours dancing, traveling, and picking blueberries with his dear partner Maggie Provencher.

He is survived by his four children, Cherry McLaughlin, Patrick McLaughlin and his wife Maggi, Kirby (Mike) Pierson and her husband Dale, and O'Regan McLaughlin and her partner Steven (Fez) Fessenden; five grandchildren, Eben Jones and his wife Jharley, Colin McLaughlin and his wife Jennifer, Caitlin McLaughlin, Jacob Pierson and his wife Allie, and Johanna Pierson; and four great grandchildren.
