YORK BEACH, Maine - Jonathan J. Greenawalt, 66, of Church St., died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013. He was born Sept. 11, 1947 in Newton, Mass. a son of James F. and Eleanor L. (Goulding) Greenawalt. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with an Associate Degree in Fire Technology and with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Education. He had worked as a Firefighter in Sudbury, Mass. He was a former Director of Fire/Life Safety at the University of Washington in Seattle and former Fire Marshall of Kipsat County Bainbridge Island Fire Dept. He was a retired Deputy Fire Chief in Concord, and was the youngest Fire Chief in New Hampshire for the Durham-UNH Fire Dept. He was the editor for NFPA Magazine in Boston, Mass. He enjoyed spending time with friends, gardening, and walking to the Nubble Light. The Pacific Northwest had a special place in Jon's heart. He leaves his loving wife of 15 years, Catherine A. (Jellison) Greenawalt and her two sons, Donald E. Abbott and his wife Jennifer of Berwick, Maine and Joshua R. Abbott and his wife Megan of Kittery, Maine; 4 grandchildren Devin, Ryan, Elise, and Sam; a brother-in-law Jim Jellison and his wife Alice of Fitchburg, Mass.; 3 nephews Robert, Chris, and Shane; a brother-in-law Brian Spiegelman of Pacifica, Calif. also several cousins. The family would like to give a special thank you to the Staff at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover for making Jon's final days comfortable and peaceful.

A calling hour will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 4 in the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York, Maine with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11 a.m. at Star of the Sea Church on Church St., in York Beach, Maine. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hyder Family Hospice House or to a Fire Dept. of your choice.
