Maxine L. Lacy

BARRINGTON - Maxine L. Lacy, 65, of Barrington, passed away peacefully at her home on September 4, 2013.

Maxine was born on October 16, 1947 in Dover, to Olga (Munson) and Maxwell Lacy who predeceased her. Her family owned and operated Lacy's Department Store, which for decades was an iconic retail fixture in downtown Dover. She graduated from Dover High School in 1965, attended Westbrook Jr. College in Maine, and graduated from New York University with a B.S. in Nursing in 1980.

Maxine returned to New Hampshire where she dedicated herself to her nursing career. She worked in a number of health care facilities. Among them are Rockingham County Nursing Home, Tri-City Visiting Nurses Association and Dover Rehabilitation. She was widely recognized as an accomplished and dedicated nurse. All who knew her; her patients, their families, her coworkers and her friends alike recognized her unique caring and compassion.

As Maxine approached retirement, she turned her nurturing spirit toward animals. Already a pet lover and guardian, she started a business, Pet Sitters Plus. When she retired from nursing, she devoted herself entirely to her pet sitting, her many rescued pets and to the welfare of animals overall. It has been said that as Maxine helped pets, she helped their people equally. She was a generous and dear friend to many.

Contributions in Maxine's memory may be made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, 262 County Farm Rd., Dover, N.H. 03820.

A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate Maxine's life on Friday, September 13, at 10 a.m. at The Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road, Lee, N.H. Following the service, at 12:30 p.m., there will be an informal gathering at Maxine's favorite place, Short Sands Beach in York Beach, Maine. Details will be available at the Memorial Service or through Purdy. Pets are welcome at both gatherings. To sign our online guest book, please go to
