SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Melvin A. Bailey Jr., 78, of Waterside Lane in South Berwick, Maine died on July 6, 2012 at his home surrounded by loved ones.

Born on September 15, 1933 in Wiscasset, Maine, he was a son of Melvin A. Bailey Sr and Sadie (Grover) Bailey. He attended local schools, graduating from nearby Bath High School. He worked in his early years as a clam digger, Bath Iron Worker and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a member of the Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Local #6 in Boston as a pipe coverer and insulator. Following retirement he worked at Hydro Systems, Lobster Connection, Cummings Lobster and he especially enjoyed his years working with his family of co workers at Maine Lobster Outlet.
He and his loving wife Marjorie E. (Shapleigh) Bailey enjoyed nearly forty eight years of marriage living in their home on Waterside Lane in South Berwick, Maine beginning in 1964, where he enjoyed his bountiful vegetable gardens, sharing his vegetables with family and friends as well as enjoying the many hummingbird friends he tended to over the years. He and Marjorie enjoyed travel to Alaska, their cross country motorhome trip together and many trips to visit with their extended family on the Island of Kauai in Hawaii.
Mel proudly served his country as a post Korean War Veteran of the United States Army serving as an infantryman and was a loyal volunteer and kitchen fixture, working as a corner man preparing his special home fries during monthly breakfasts, at the Martel Roberge American Legion Post #47 in Rollinsford, for over thirty years. Mel also was a dedicated member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #444 in Portsmouth.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife Marjorie of South Berwick, Maine; a sister Loretta Alty of Rochester; and a brother Donald and his wife Shirley Bailey of Clinton, Maine; children Debra Gomez of Texas, Deanna and her husband Mark Meyer of Arizona, Arlene Conley of Berwick, Maine Linda Oakes of Dexter, Maine, Beth DuBois and her husband Michael of Rochester, Melvin Bailey III and his wife Leila of Virginia, William and his wife Joyce Budlong of Eliot, Maine and Michael Budlonger of North Berwick, Maine; twenty five grand children and 17 great grand children.
A funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery, Maine 03904 with the Rev. Elizabeth Hoffman officiating. Friends may visit with Mel's family on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory for Penile Cancer Research to, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center - Norris Cotton Cancer Center 1 Medial Center Drive Lebanon, N.H. 03756, or to the Hyder Family Hospice House 285 County Farm Road Dover, N.H. 03820. Care for the Bailey Family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
