Ronald L. Danforth

DOVER - Ronald L. Danforth, 84, a longtime resident of Dover, died peacefully on February 28, 2014 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Ron was born on May 14, 1929 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, the son of Dana and Louise Danforth and grew up primarily in New England. He enlisted with the United States Navy in 1948 and served 20 years of active duty and then served another 10 years in USN Reserves.

Ron was married for 38 years to Shirley Burton and together they became a blended family of ten children. Following his active duty with the U.S. Navy, Ron worked at a variety of retail stores in the men's clothing departments; he was also the manager at King's Department Store in the camera division. This would become one of Ron's favorite hobbies; taking photographs of the kids, traveling and during vacation times.

Ron was a gifted musician and played accordion on the boat, The Captain Red in the harbor of Massachusetts and played piano and accordion at the Steak & Stein in Newburyport, Mass. Locally, he could be found entertaining the folks at Weeks Traffic Circle Restaurant. Ron was an avid sports fan; he enjoyed watching his beloved Red Sox and the great golfers of the past 20 years. Ron volunteered at a variety of Senior Citizens Centers, where he played the old favorites on the piano. He was a great reader of mysteries, never went anywhere without his revered crossword puzzle magazine, and going out to breakfast on Sundays and Tuesdays. Ron enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren playing mini golf, teaching them how to play the piano and was willing to help them reach their dreams.

Ron was a dedicated life member of the American Legion Post # 8 in Dover, where he held various positions and enjoyed spending time with his fellow servicemen and women. He was also a talented woodworker and collector of Steins and ships. A final roll call was given and Ron has now entered into eternal rest. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Danforth; his brother and sisters, Barry, Dorothy and Marilyn; his daughters, Debra and Diana; his stepchildren, James, Ronald, Debra, Kathy, Cheryle, Mary and Barbara; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Holley.

A celebration of Ron's life will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post # 8, 640 Central Ave., in Dover, N.H. with Chaplain James Parcell, presiding.
