DOVER - Walworth "Wally" Johnson, Jr., 72, of Dover, died March 22, 2014. He passed away at his home in the loving company of his family after a heroic battle with ALS.
Born June 11, 1941 in Andover, Massachusetts, son of Walworth and Margaret (O'Connor) Johnson, he attended St. John's Prep and graduated from Boston College in 1964.
During the Vietnam War, Wally served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy aboard the USS Winston. Upon his return home Wally owned and operated Johnson Hardware for over 30 years.
Wally was very committed to his community having served in the Dover Rotary Club, as past President of the Dover Chamber of Commerce, past President of the Somersworth Rotary Club, and former Governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of New Hampshire.
An accomplished sailor, his great love of the sea and boats marked Wally's life and brought him great joy. He was a founding member of the Piscataqua Sailing Club, a past president of the Great Bay Yacht Club and a member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club. A kind, gentle and compassionate man, he was always willing to lend his expertise to any sailor, or anyone else in his community.
Deeply devoted to his family and friends, Wally's uncompromising dependability, loyalty and integrity will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He leaves his wife, Janet (Reissfelder) Johnson of Dover; his daughter, Julie (Johnson) Forest and her husband, John of Dover; 2 granddaughters, Ashlyn and Brooke; two sisters, Judy Ballester of Sacramento, CA and Margaret Kelly and her husband, John of Calabasas, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call Tuesday, March 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Parish of the Assumption, St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave. Burial with military honors will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
Those wishing to honor Wally's memory are invited to make memorials in his name to ALS Foundation (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, "Lou Gehrig's Disease"), Northern New England Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 309, The Concord Center, Concord, N.H. 03301.
