Billy Robert Bliss, 87, of Poolesville, Maryland, passed away on February 11, 2014, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Francis O'Donovan Bliss and Dorothy Cole Bliss.|
Bill served in the U.S. Navy, and was an active member of the Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department for almost 61 years. He was instrumental in the creation of the Montgomery County Fire-Rescue Commission and served as its Chairman for three terms. The present commission is based on the work that he accomplished as its first Chairman. Bill owned and operated Poolesville Supply Co., Inc. for 30 years, was a Nationwide Insurance agent and served as president of Banner Glass Co., Inc.
Bill was a boating enthusiast and loved spending time at his second home in Grasonville, MD. He spent many years playing softball for the UMCVFD.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Bliss, Jr.
Bill is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, Janet Painter Bliss; and their four children, Robby Bliss (Theresa), Janell Bliss, Bonnie Golian (Ed) and Julie Thomas; as well as eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2014, at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville, MD 20838. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday February 17, 2014, at Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church, 17821 Elgin Road, Poolesville, MD 20837. Interment will follow at Monocacy Cemetery, in Beallsville, MD.
