The Reverend Elizabeth Carpenter of Monrovia, Maryland, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2014 at home. She was 73. |
Elizabeth was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. She was the valedictorian of Murphy High School in Mobile, Class of 1959. Elizabeth attended Duke University where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1963. In 1991, she earned a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard University.
She was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts on July 22, 1992, and served several parishes in Massachusetts until she was called to be rector of St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Damascus, MD in 1997.
She was rector of St. Anne's from 1997 until her retirement in 2011. While at St. Anne's, she ministered to hundreds of families and oversaw the construction of the church's new sanctuary. She was passionate about preaching the word of God, her family, her friends, and laughter.
Reverend Carpenter is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Vicki Hudson of Elkridge, MD, two grandsons, and her sisters, Kathy Keevan of San Antonio, TX and Karen Beach of San Marcos, TX. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, and two brothers.
There will be a memorial service at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at St. Anne's Church in Damascus with the Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of Washington, officiating. The Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home in Damascus is assisting the family with arrangements.
