Joseph Francis Borda III, former senior editor for Free Congress Foundation, died Sept. 17 at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Free Congress Foundation founder Paul M. Weyrich hired Borda in 2003 to produce Weyrich's weekly radio broadcast, edit, write and research politics and mass transit issues. He worked for the think tank until 2009, a few months after Weyrich died. Borda was born Nov. 15, 1942, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Joseph F. Borda Jr. and Helen Jackson Borda Holden, and stepson of the late James Holden.His father was the International Monetary Fund's first personnel director, and he inspired Borda's deep appreciation for government service and world politics. He worked on Capitol Hill in a number of administrative positions for members of Congress during his college and post-college years. Borda's mother's family worked for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in Hinton, W.Va., where he lived part time while his father served in the Navy in World War II and after. He enjoyed studying the railroad and train history and economics his whole life.He attended Beauvoir School and St. Albans School. He completed high school at Wooster School in Danbury, Conn.He tried to follow his father's example by joining the Navy in the 1960s, but did not pass the physical. He attended the University of North Carolina, and obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan. Following graduation, he worked in a variety of key finance and accounting positions with suppliers in the automotive industry.He pursued his interest in politics, starting with his work for the Barry Goldwater presidential campaign in 1964. Starting in 1989 he was twice elected to the Ann Arbor City Council as a Republican in the predominantly Democratic Fifth ward.He was a newspaper reporter covering local government for the Times Community Newspaper organization in Northern Virginia between 2000 and 2003.In 2004, Borda moved to Brunswick, Md., in large part to use the MARC train to commute to Washington.Borda attended Catoctin Presbyterian Church in Waterford, Va., Church of Our Saviour, Oatlands, near Leesburg, Va., and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Brownsville, Md.He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Patti Snodgrass Borda, and daughter, Virginia Jackson Snodgrass Borda, both of Brunswick; one brother Walter J. Borda of Northville, Mich., and three nephews James Borda (Eliza), Andrew Borda (Paola) and Tom Borda.He looked forward to traveling with his family around Europe someday by train, especially to show off his father's Hungarian ancestors' origins. He placed his greatest value in his Christian faith and his family.A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Church of Our Saviour, Oatlands, 39918 Oatlands Mill Road, Leesburg.Memorial contributions may be sent to the building fund of Church of Our Saviour, P.O.
