Richard James Atwell, Sr., age 77, of Boyds, was called to heaven on Sunday, February 9, 2014. |
He was born on January 27, 1937. Mr. Atwell was a son of the late, Grace Lee Atwell and Frederick John Atwell.
He was the husband of Mary Jane (Case) Atwell, whom he had been married to for 56 years.
Richard was retired from the Montgomery County Government - Roads Depot. He was a volunteer fire fighter at Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department from 1955 to 1965, earning an officer rank of Lieutenant. He was a mechanic by heart and a NASCAR enthusiast.
He is survived by three children, Deborah L. Malone and husband Robert of Boyds, Richard J. Atwell, Jr. of Sabillasville, and Frederick J. Atwell II of Mount Airy. Richard leaves behind two granddaughters, Michelle A. Malone and Patricia M. Bennett. He will be remembered by his two great-grandchildren that were dear to his heart, Kristina L. Bennett and Mason H. Bennett. He is also survived by his brothers, George F. Atwell, Reginald S. Atwell, and William T. Atwell; brother-in-law, Douglas Vinson; sisters-in-law, Mabel Dean, Anna Windsor, Nellie Phoebus; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald L. Atwell.
Friends may call at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD, on Sunday, February 16, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. where a funeral service will be held on Monday, February 17, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Darnestown Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
