Charles was born on March 10, 1913, in Norwood, MO. His family came by train from Clark County and eventually ended up in Sanger, CA where they made their home. After his graduation from Sanger High School, Charles worked for Safeway Stores Inc. from 1937 to June 1942. During this time, he spent two summers working at the Hume Lake Grocery Store. On August 12, 1942 he enlisted in the US Navy where he earned the Good Conduct Medal for his service during the Philippine Liberation. He was honorably discharged on October 12, 1945. Charles is fondly remembered as a local business owner. In 1948 he opened the Malaga General Store. The business was a success and remained open for 15 years. It was at this point that Charles decided to open a grocery store in the small town of Fowler. He operated Pollock's Market from 1964 to 1974. Charles always had a vibrant personality and friendly smile. It is because of this that he holds a special place in the hearts and memories of all who visited his stores. With a love for business, Charles went on to work in the office of La Tapatia Tortilleria for ten years before finally retiring. Charles was not the kind of man to just sit around the house. He enjoyed working in his yard and was a member of the Moose and Elks Lodge. In addition, he spent time as a member of the Masonic Lodge. One of Charles' favorite past-times was dancing. He took every opportunity to get out on the dance floor and have some fun. However, a great evening would not be complete for Charles without delicious salmon and a good scotch. Always an avid sports fan, Charles loved watching basketball, football, and baseball. He was a life-long San Francisco Giants fan and even took a trip to AT&T Park to watch a ballgame in 2006. With enthusiasm, he loved to cheer, "Go Giants!" Charles passed away at the age of 101 on June 1, 2014, in Fresno. He is survived by his loving companion, Marjorie Gross; son, James Pollock and daughter-in-law DeEtta; grandson Brenton and his wife Rachel; grandchildren, Stasia and Ashtin; and niece Peggy Pollock. The family would like to thank the staff of Golden Meadows Home Care for the special care they gave Charles during his last two weeks of life. They'd also like to give a special thank you to John and Helen Hansen for the love, friendship, and support they gave to Charles.
