Richard Leroy Cleland was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon on August 2, 1928. He passed away in Fresno on April 17, 2014, at the age of 85. The seventh of Bertha and Rennie Cleland's nine children, he was raised on a dairy farm in Gazelle, California. Along with his twin brother, Harold, they worked from an early age helping with milking and many other chores around the farm. After graduating from Yreka High School in 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army along with his brother Harold. Most of his military career was served in post World War II Japan. Upon his discharge from the Army, he attended Modesto Junior College and was offered a football scholarship at Fresno State College. At Fresno State he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees. He received his teaching credential in 1953 and taught industrial arts courses at the high school and junior high school levels. He moved on to Fresno City College where he became the Dean of Men then the College Business Manager for the next 23 years until l his retirement in 1996. After retirement, he enjoyed playing golf, trips to the coast, lawn bowling and the annual Cleland Family Reunion. He is survived by his wife Jan; daughters, Debra Nelson and her husband Don, and Suzanne Cleland; son, Scott Cleland and his wife Terri; twin brother,Harold Cleland; brother, Ronald Cleland; granddaughter Destiny; great-granddaughter McKayla; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Chapel of the Light on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. Remembrances may be made to the Fresno Lawn Bowls Club, 3908 E.
