Jack Richard Oberly March 12, 1921– September 24, 2013 Jack Richard Oberly, age 92, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at his home in Clifton. He was born in Palisade, Colorado to Ralph Waldo Oberly and Oral Leona Herman Oberly on March 12, 1921. He never moved far away; he was proud to say that he had live on the same property all of his life. Jack graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1939. He married Evelyn Belle Allen on April 16, 1943. They had one daughter, Jean Marie, and one son, Carl. Jack was a fruit farmer, raising peaches, pears, and apples. He loved his farm. Jack was a very generous man. He often took a truck load of peaches to Oberlin, Kansas to sell in a friend's grocery store. He would offer you fruit for free if you would come and pick it up. He also worked as a school bus driver, and as a mechanic for Wagner's Garage in Palisade. Jack helped his father in the manufacturing of liquefied lime-sulphur for spraying fruit trees. They later sold their business to C.D. Smith Chemical Company, later known as McKesson Chemical. He went to work for Smith Chemical to assist them in making the lime-sulphur, and retired from McKesson Chemical. He was also a truck driver for them. He was a volunteer fireman for the Clifton Fire Department for many years. He was a member of the Clifton Lion's Club for 68 years, with near perfect attendance. He was most interested in the Lion's work to save eyesight. He worked with Kid's Sight, which checks pre-school and first grade children's eyes for diseases which may lead to blindness later on. He had received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Lion's Award, the highest award possible. Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved cooking, especially apple pies and apple dumplings. He often made potato soup for the Lion's Club. He loved young children, he always kept a little candy or gum in his shirt pocket to give them and they always knew that he had something in his pocket for them. He enjoyed helping his neighbors with irrigation water, or anything else. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Evelyn, and his son, Carl Waldo Oberly, both in 2003, and two sisters, Maxine Sorter and Thelma Gardner.
