Richard K. Carey July 22, 1945 – December 27, 2012 Richard K. Carey of Grand Junction, died December 27, 2012, following a lengthy illness. He was 67 years old. He was born July 22, 1945, in Coffeyville, KS to Harry and Geraldine (Hoover) Carey. The family moved to Paonia in 1946, where he attended schools and graduated in 1963. Richard served in the US Army from 1966 - 1973, serving two tours in Viet Nam. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Army Commendation for Valor. His college included Mesa College from 1963 - 1965 for accounting; UCCS from 1973 - 1976 for Political Science, UCCS from 1982 - 1984 for Computer Science, and later, he attended OSU for a BS in geology, the study he most loved. He married Carol Jean Powell September, 1964, they divorced in 1967. He married Teresa Lucero in December, 1967, they divorced in 1972. He married Susan Mehring in February, 1972, they divorced in 1978. Rick was preceded in death by his father, Harry Carey, and daughter, Hope Carey. He is survived by his mother, Geri Carey of Paonia; brother, Mike Carey of West Jordan, UT; sister, Barbara Axelson of Paonia; daughter, Audrey Sandvik and son, Keith Carey, both of Stillwater, OK; daughters, Holly and Susan Carey, both of Colorado Springs, and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation was handled by All Veterans Funeral and Cremation in Denver.
