GEORGE E. CAREY

George Emanuel Carey, age 78, passed away on Feb. 8, 2013 at the Southern Arizona Veteran's Hospice Center.

George was born on March 11, 1934 in Tucson and married Carol Brown on Oct. 21, 1963 in Tucson.

He attended Tucson High School, graduating in 1953, and played on the Badgers state championship football team in 1951. He attended the University of Arizona and graduated from the Milan Art Studio in 1959.

George served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-1956 and was a Korean War Veteran. He worked as a sports cartoonist for the Arizona Daily Star, the Tucson Daily Citizen, the Los Angeles Mirror and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.

George also was an art director at Filmation Studios in Los Angeles and worked for 22 years in the art department of the Los Angeles Times, retiring in 1993.

He sang in the Tucson Boys Choir under founder and director Eduardo Caso.

George was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Green Valley.

He was a member and past post commander of the 4th District Nisei VFW Post 1961 in Gardena, Calif., and a member of the Green Valley Marines Detachment #1126 Marine Corps League.

George finished 11 marathons after having open-heart surgery in 1976.

George is survived by his wife Carol, son Casper and daughter Katherine. He is also survived by sisters Myrtle (John) Goulding and Jeannette (Arthur) Acosta, both of Tucson.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church in Green Valley. 1393 W. Mission Twin Buttes.
