He grew up in Hale Center, Texas, and graduated from Hale Center High School with honors. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in journalism. He began his writing career with the Albuquerque Journal and also wrote for the Ruidoso (NM) News and the Portales (NM) News Tribune. He moved to Philadelphia, PA, in the early 1960s, where he served as a correspondent for The Associated Press, where he was nominated in 1963 for a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting of a mine disaster in Pennsylvania. He moved to Arizona in 1971 to assume a position as a faculty member in the Journalism Department of the University of Arizona. He later joined the staff of the University of Arizona news bureau and then later took a position at the U of A Alumni Department writing various publications. He worked briefly in real estate, then moved to Tubac, AZ, in 1996 where he began writing for the Green Valley News. In addition to reporting, he wrote a popular regular column "Lamb Stew" for the newspaper before his retirement at age 75 in 2010. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves and was an Eagle Scout.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Hale Lamb; daughter Laurel Earhart and her husband Peter of Santa Monica, CA, and their children Gannon, Logan, Mason and Devan; and daughter Bethany Garcia and her husband Michael of Nogales, AZ, and their daughter Zoe. Witty, wise, kind, bright, great conversationalist - a great companion to Ann, loving father and grandfather - a man for all seasons! I will not see his like again. Sending love and sincere condolences to Ann, Bethany, Laurel and their extended families. It has been a privilege to know Jim since 1992.

Jim was a wonderful man who touched the lives of many. I only knew him for a short time, but we developed a great friendship and I truly looked forward to seeing him a couple times a week. He had an amazing sense of humor; I will never forget his little song about his last name :)
